The TOUS Teddy: An international symbol of iconic jewelry

Rosa Oriol: “The day we begin to think we are somebody important is the day we cease to be important.”

We’ve all seen that loveable bear hanging from necklaces, earrings and now on handbags but now were bringing you the people behind the “beary” special brand so we can get a glimpse of how it began, how it evolved and where it’s headed. Welcome our special guest, Rosa Tous, the creator or the world´s most famous bear speaks about TOUS´s future plans and their latest collaboration with Jennifer Lopez.

“A teddy bear is such a simple shape, and yet it transmits so many feelings,” Tous says. In the past 25 years, TOUS has reinvented her iconic teddy bear into hundreds of designs. With presence in 45 countries and more than 380 shops in cities as New York, México or Tokyo, TOUS keeps its head office in Barcelona. Founded in Spain during 1920’s, TOUS, is known throughout the world for that irresistible Teddy Bear and for their first class craftsmanship that people from all around the world have come to embrace. Unlike most thriving global fashion companies, TOUS remains a family business still to this day. Currently at the helm of the business is Salvador Tous, the son of original founder, and his wife Rosa Tous. Their four daughters also work at the company. A TOUS timeline is here for your reference.

On Stage

Blahnik meets TOUS:

F.S. How did the brilliant collaboration between you and Manolo Blahnik come about?
TOUS: I met Manolo at a party about ten years ago. I think the idea of doing something together came out immediately as we shared many similarities. (Both Spanish and ran a family business for starters) We set out to immortalize the most classic Manolo shoe, and The Maryjane Campari was born.

F.S.What kind of customer wears the“Campari”?
TOUS: Everybody truly likes it. We do not have a specific target for this piece. They are people who just love the piece because they´re really into fashion and understand both the value and inspiration behind it. Then there are those customers that just simply love the shoe as a jewel to wear.

F.S. Will there be any more shoes converted into jewelry and/or any more collaborations in the future with other designers?
TOUS: We definitely loved working with Manolo Blahnik and I’m sure this is not the end of our future together.

The Dance Bear and J.Lo:

F.S. How did the decision to have Jennifer Lopez be the new face of the brand come into play and what were some of the factors that you had to take in consideration when choosing Jennifer to represent your brand?
TOUS: She´s a woman who attracts a lot of fans by her sense of style, she´s a successful mother, artist and a professional in everything she does and of course she loves Tous!

F.S Who chooses the TOUS pieces that Jennifer wears to awards, videos, shows, etc?
TOUS: I think that our customers get inspiration from the red carpet looks for their own events and parties, we have plenty styles that adapt to many different styles of woman, so there´s not an specific kind of woman who chooses the same pieces that J.Lo uses.

Interview

F.S: Tell us how the bear symbol came about and how it has evolved over the years?
TOUS: The idea came about in Milano, where Rosa Oriol was walking by a store window and suddenly spotted a memorable little teddy bear. It was at that moment when she became inspired to create a jewel using the bear form.

F.S. You began as a small watch repair shop in 1920’s and today you offer so much more than just jewelry to your fans. Can you tell us about some of the other exciting accessories you are now carrying?
TOUS:We are jewelers, and we will always be, that is the foundation of our business. But for my 50th birthday party, I received a beautiful personalized bear with our symbol, I absolutely loved it!
So after receiving that gift, we began creating our own line of leather purses with our core values and undeniable brand spirit . We have also launched a line of sunglasses, watches and even our own signature scent.

The Tous commitment:

F.S. Can you explain The Kimberley process you have implemented in your company and why it is so important to you?
TOUS:The Kimberley process is an initiative we share with the government, the industry and the civil society in order to stop the traffic of conflictive diamonds. Conflicted diamonds are stones used by rebel groups to finance war against legitimate governments. The key for us is to work with “sightholders” in whom we can trust that our diamonds have an absolutely legal and controlled procedure, that´s why we decided to form part of the Kimberly process ten years ago.

F.S. The TOUS business model is characterized by its high degree of vertical integration, could you explain what exactly this means?
TOUS: We are a brand with a high vertical integration which means we have our own design, production, distribution and retail sale. We buy all our stones and materials in the different international fairs and we then distribute in our stores and sell it all over 40 countries.

Collection

F.S. What exactly is “The Dance Bear”
TOUS: The dance bear is our latest product for Christmas. It’s inspiration comes from both the 50´s decade and the colors and esthetics of the pin ups.

Future and Inspirations

F.S. What are some of the inspirations for your Autumn-Winter collection?
TOUS: We were inspired by great movies, glamourous film icons, retro cocktail parties, dance music and classic emblems from the 1950´s.

F.S. Any hints on what we can expect this Spring?
TOUS: We´re planning something big and beautiful in a far far far away country.

F.S. If you could sum up The TOUS mantra in one sentence, what would it be?
TOUS: TOUS celebrate parties, international prizes, appears on magazine´s covers and so on, but we like to keep our feet on the ground. The day we start believing we are someone we wont be anymore.
