It’s amazing that a Katy Perry song can unite a room full of people thousands of miles away from home.

harajuku stroll

A twelve hour flight landing at 4 am in the morning couldn’t stand in the way of spending my first day of arrival exploring Tokyo. This decision translated to playing the waiting game since apparently all the shops opened at noon. Regardless, the morning hours in limbo was well spent relieving our little culture shocks. Tossed in a few moments of “Look over there!” or “What’s that?!” Which brings forward the point that large and daunting that it is, Tokyo is a city full of wonderful surprises.

The little things that constitute people’s every day lives drew the most fascination. The uniformity of black suits dotting the streets in the morning when the business men went off to work. The kind and courteous mannerisms of everyone, everywhere we went. How the wait at the bus stop (so unlike any city in America), can be identified as a single, straight file. The overall visual presence I perceived of those about on the street, whether culturally engrained or consciously applied, put a collective effort into their personal style. It became pretty evident that Tokyo is the perfect back-drop for streetstyle aficionados.

tokyo’s fashion night out

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6229/6327328019_bf9e508dd7_b.jpghttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6051/6328070368_bab0e1b463_b.jpgThe Costume National party was an international blogger brethren. Ennio Capasa’s architectural and interior design was brilliant and madness. The randomly placed hot tub along the patio added a comic relief from everyone’s most natural expression: jaw dropping in awe.http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6037/6328045702_b7ecbcf357_b.jpghttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6236/6328074260_913d3f24ae_b.jpgRoberto Cavalli and Anna Dello Russo at the Opening Partyhttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6037/6327400191_c654ae332c_b.jpgI love this simple but dressy heel at Reed Krakoffhttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6216/6327345683_2095f42980_b.jpghttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6120/6328087598_904ba5e3cd_b.jpgInside the Costume National shop at the Aoyama Complex alongside the lovely Kristinahttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6112/6333449811_da40d99c45_z.jpgLove my new point and shoot, the Olympus Pen Lite E-PL3. It has great features such as Diorama, Pop Art and my personal favorite, the Pin Hole filter that makes every shot looks as if it was taken with a fisheye lens. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6049/6328136654_78337549f4_z.jpgAnna Wintour, Michael Kors and Jennifer Hudson signing at the Michael Kors storehttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6049/6327341223_6e7a5d4702_z.jpgPlaying with the ‘Boxer Bag’ at Reed Krakoff http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6096/6327389263_4867fc6b0b_z.jpghttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6059/6328124704_9919143d86_b.jpghttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6102/6328133178_4603b53bb8_z.jpghttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6213/6327379423_8680084841_b.jpgA quick stop at Louis VuittonTaking a breather from the completely packed party at Christian Diorhttp://farm7.static.flickr.com/6105/6327348043_49033e1887_z.jpg

An overview of Tokyo’s Fashion Night Out: First a driver picked me up to head over to Costume National at the Aoyama Complex to meet the rest of the bloggers attending the event. Immediately upon arrival I met the darlings Kristina, Chiara and Carolina at Ennio Capasa’s ultra minimalist and modern abode. Then met up Yumi (our sweet sweet translator) and headed straight to Omotesando Hills for the opening party, where the madness officially began. The opening party was a complete Condenast congregation! Every single editor of Vogue Magazine came out to support Tokyo for this event: Anna Wintour, Emmanuelle Alt, Franca Sozzani, Anna Dello Russo, Eva Hughes–for the first time ever, were all gathered in one room. I spotted everyone from Roberto Cavalli, Michael Kors, and Christopher Baily. Bewildering, to say the least.

Then the night started. It seems that all of Tokyo came out to support on November 5th. Every single street was filled with crowds of people dressed to the nines. On the few breaks I sat outside due to weary feet, it was first class people watching. I visited a countless amount of stores during the night. My first stop was Roberto Cavalli, then Emporio Armani where I briefly met the president of the company and Italian Vogue Editor Franca Sozzani, played with scarfs and the photobooths at Hermes, hung around Michael Kors while Anna Wintour made her appearance alongside Michael himself and Jennifer Hudson, fawned over the shoe collection at Louis Vuitton, compressed with other Americans at Dior, and finalized my last stop at Reed Krakoff., who kindly spoiled me during this trip. I ended the night at Anna Wintour’s and Michael Kors’ party at the surreal mansion at the American Ambassador’s house. Though still frantic, the atmosphere was much more relaxed and it was nice to see all the editors and designers in the cocktail party environment. Never thought I’d find myself sipping champagne right next to Anna Wintour, but life certainly has a tendency to throw some exciting curveballs.

Words can’t do justice to the amount of overwhelm I’ve felt these past few days. Thank-you to Vogue Japan, Kenta and all the folks at Signo for such a fabulous experience. This has been a once in a life-time opportunity I’m so grateful to have partaken in and I hope that it’s just the beginning of many more experiences to come in Japan. Also had a blast meeting all my readers (and randomly enough, running into a handful of American ones) on the streets of Tokyo!
